How to Decorate Cookies with Royal Icing
Don’t be intimidated by royal icing. You can get your cookies to look like they came straight from the bakery by using a simple piping and glazing technique, coupled with a bit of patience. Here’s how to do it!
What you’ll need:
Ingredients
1
package (16 ounces) powdered sugar (4 1/2 cups)
1/3
cup warm water, (105°F to 115°F)
3
tablespoons meringue powder
1
teaspoon vanilla
1/2
teaspoon cream of tartar
Food colors, if desired
Steps
Beat all ingredients except food colors in large bowl with electric mixer on low speed until mixed. Beat on high speed 7 to 10 minutes or until very stiff. Divide and tint with food colors.

- Baked cookies, completely cooled
- Piping bag (multiple, if using more than one color)
- Squeeze bottle
- Teaspoon
- Small offset metal spatula
